Writing About Yourself and Your Work
Facilitated by Robin Cembalest
A career as an artist comes with constant demands for texts: bio, statement, social media, blurbs for proposals, grant applications, digital content of all kinds. In this series of two 90-minute workshops, Robin Cembalest will teach skills to write about art, your projects, and yourself for all your professional needs. You’ll learn to develop nuanced language about your identity and how it connects to your work, to describe your art and position it in a context, to chronicle your process, and to express your meaning and intention. With examples from social media, artist bios, program handouts, press releases, and more, Robin provides outlines and insights to help creators in any field to communicate more effectively.
About Robin: Respected journalist, influential Instagrammer, and the former longtime editor of ARTnews, Robin Cembalest has built a specialty in professional training for the digital era. She teaches writing, social media, public speaking, and other essential skills across the art industry.
Cembalest works as educator, consultant, coach, and mentor, helping institutions and individuals to communicate effectively and sharing her expertise on the changing shape of art media. A faculty member of School of Visual Arts, where she teaches in several departments, Cembalest has developed new coursework that helps artists navigate websites, social media, that dreaded elevator pitch, and all the other demands of self-promotion today. As a writer and reporter, Cembalest published influential coverage on the culture wars, censorship, multiculturalism, and museum politics, now available on her website. These days she is also known as @rcembalest, handle of her lively Instagram chronicling her travels in the art world.
